Aspiring Scientists Summer Internship Program (ASSIP)

ASSIP is a competitive summer research internship at George Mason University that provides high school and undergraduate students with the opportunity to work directly with university faculty researchers and collaborating institutions on original research projects. Students gain hands-on experience with advanced technologies and equipment, develop scientific writing and communication skills, and earn three college credits upon successful completion.

Authentic university-level research experience. Direct mentorship from faculty researchers. Participation in original research. Experience with advanced scientific technologies and equipment. Development of scientific writing and communication skills. Opportunity to present research at the final Research Symposium. 3 George Mason University college credits. Credits may potentially be transferred to another university, subject to that institution's policies. Broad range of STEM research areas. Students can participate for up to two summer sessions.

Age: Remote internships: minimum 15 years old. In-person/hybrid computer-lab internships: minimum 15 years old. Wet-lab internships: minimum 16 years old. There is no maximum age as long as the student has not graduated from university before or during the internship. Application considers: STEM coursework; GPA; volunteer/work experience; personal statements; research interests. Recommendation letter: Not required at the initial application stage. Transcript: Not required at the initial application stage. Interview: Highly qualified applicants may be invited to interview with potential mentors. Prior research experience: Not formally required. International students: May apply, but some laboratories may be unavailable to non-U.S. citizens, and George Mason University does not sponsor visas.
