Breakthrough Junior Challenge

The Breakthrough Junior Challenge is an annual global science communication competition organized by the Breakthrough Prize Foundation. Students create an original video of 2 minutes or less explaining a complex scientific concept or theory in physics, mathematics, or life sciences. The video should be scientifically accurate, engaging, creative, and accessible to a general audience.

• Develops science communication and scientific storytelling skills • Builds the ability to explain complex concepts clearly • Develops public speaking, creativity, and video-production skills • Provides international recognition and exposure • Includes peer-to-peer review experience • Opportunity to become a Regional Champion or Finalist • Winner receives a $250,000 post-secondary scholarship • Winner's teacher receives $50,000 • Winner's school receives a $100,000 science laboratory

Eligibility: Students aged 13–18 who meet the competition's age requirements; participation is open internationally. Application: • Original science-explanation video, maximum 2 minutes • Online application/profile • Several short written responses (up to 250 words each) • Age/identity verification • Parent/guardian consent for minors Motivation essay: No separate motivation essay; short application questions are required. Recommendation letter: Not required. Interview: No standard admissions interview. Peer review: Participants must review other submissions as part of the competition process. Prior experience: Not formally required.
