British Physics Olympiad (BPhO)

A series of challenging physics competitions for school students organized by the British Physics Olympiad. Problems emphasize physical reasoning, mathematical modelling and non-routine problem solving. BPhO also forms part of the UK pathway toward the International Physics Olympiad.

Strong preparation for physics competitions; develops advanced problem-solving; international participation; competition results can strengthen a STEM portfolio; high-performing students in the UK pathway can progress toward IPhO selection.

Participation is generally arranged through schools/teachers, rather than as a completely open individual registration. BPhO has different rounds and levels. Availability and registration procedures for overseas schools depend on the specific round. No research experience is required; strong school-level physics and mathematics are important.
