The School of The New York Times Summer Academy

A two-week in-person summer program for high school students in New York City. Students explore contemporary topics in journalism, media, culture, business, technology, arts, sports, science and other fields through academic classes, hands-on projects, industry interaction and experiences across New York City. In 2026, the program offered four two-week terms.

Develops writing, communication, media literacy, critical thinking and research skills; hands-on projects; interaction with journalists and industry professionals; international community; immersive exposure to New York City and real-world social and cultural issues.

Primarily for high-school students; the published 2026 requirements specified Grades 10–12 and graduating seniors, ages 15–18 on the first day. The application includes an online form, transcript/school report, one recommendation from a teacher/counselor/school official, short-answer questions and an application fee. A writing/work sample may be submitted as an optional supplement. International students need strong English proficiency because instruction is in English.
