Description
The International Linguistics Olympiad (IOL) is an annual international competition for secondary-school students focused on solving challenging, self-contained problems in linguistics. Problems may involve phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, historical linguistics, sociolinguistics, computational linguistics and other areas. No prior knowledge of linguistics or extensive knowledge of foreign languages is required; logical reasoning, pattern recognition, careful analysis and creative problem-solving are central to the competition.
Students qualify through their national Linguistics Olympiad. At the international stage, national teams compete in individual and team competitions. In 2026, 255 contestants from 65 teams representing 46 countries and territories competed in Bucharest.
